What is a Blower Door Test?
Thermal imaging with blower door testing combines two powerful diagnostic tools to provide a comprehensive analysis of your home’s energy efficiency and air sealing needs. While thermal imaging detects temperature differences caused by insulation issues or moisture, a blower door test quantifies the amount of air leakage in a building and helps locate leaks
Why this test is important.
- Comprehensive Diagnosis: This combination allows for a thorough assessment of your home’s building envelope, identifying both air leaks and areas lacking insulation.
- Enhanced Accuracy: Using a blower door to depressurize the home enhances the accuracy of thermal imaging by exaggerating air leaks, making them easier to detect and visualize.
- Effective Solutions: Pinpointing the exact locations of energy loss and moisture allows for more accurate and effective remediation, reducing guesswork and unnecessary costs.
How It Works
Blower Door Test: We begin by setting up a blower door, a powerful fan that mounts into the frame of an exterior door. The fan pulls air out of the house to lower the air pressure inside. The higher outside air pressure then flows in through all unsealed cracks and openings.
Thermal Imaging Capture: While the building is under pressure, we use infrared cameras to capture thermal images that show where cold air is infiltrating the building. This process highlights areas where insulation is inadequate or missing and where air sealing is needed.
Analysis and Reporting: Our experts analyze the thermal and air pressure data to provide a detailed report on your home’s energy losses, complete with visual images and specific recommendations for improving energy efficiency and comfort.
